Former lead singer of the heavy metal band Pantera, and most currently the frontman for heavy metal group Down, Phil Anselmo has recently acquired another position as a racist.
During the Monster Energy Ride For Dime Dimebash 2016, a charity honoring late Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, Anselmo was captured on video issuing a Nazi salute to the crowd, and then yelling, “White Power” after just having had performed Pantera’s hit, “Walk.”
Housecore Records posted a video of Anselmo’s racist act to Youtube, which he then responded,
“Ok folks, I’ll own this one, but dammit, I was joking, and the “inside joke of the night” was because we were drinking f—ing white wine, hahaha… Of all f—ing things. Some of y’all need to thicken up your skin. There’s plenty of f—ers to pick on with a more realistic agenda. I f—ing love everyone, I f—ing loathe everyone, and that’s that. No apologies from me.
However, this isn’t the first time that Anselmo has taken a racist stance, especially in front of a crowd. In 1995 during a concert, he went on rant about how “the trend” of “whites buying black rap bands’ albums because they think it sounds deep and go to dance clubs and dance to the rap shit” upsets him. And if that random rant wasn’t bizarre enough, he went on to unnecessarily discuss “black on black crime” and defined it as meaning that blacks are to stop killing each other, but instead kill white people. “It’s okay to shoot a fucking white person? What’s it say to you because that’s what it says to me?” Anselmo proclaimed. He ended his rant by delving into a white pride speech.
Despite Anselmo’s claim that his ridiculous outburst was nothing, but a mere “inside joke,” as a result of “drinking f–cking white wine,” Machine Head’s frontman Rob Flynn called Anselmo out in a video that he posted, claiming there wasn’t any white wine being drank backstage.
In his video Flynn added, “The only thing you were drinking, Phil Anselmo, was Beck’s German beer. Maybe that’s where the joke came from, huh? …Only in the metal community is something like this so, so brushed off… If this was Chad from Nickelback, if this was Justin Bieber, if this was Tom Brady, if this was Lars f—ing Ulrich… heads would roll.” He also stated that, “Within 30 seconds of sitting down and talking to him, his drunk ass decided to let me know in no uncertain terms that he hated the ‘nig-er’ era of Machine Head, referring to our third and fourth album, The Burning Red.”
Nevertheless, despite claiming there would be “no apologies” given, Anselmo caved and issued the following apology:
Philip H. Anselmo here, and I’m here to, basically, respond to all the heat I’ve been getting that I deserve completely. I was at the Dimebash and it was extremely late at night [and] there was heavy-duty talk between myself and those who love Dime. And heavy emotions were flowing, jokes were made backstage that transpired upon the stage, and it was ugly, it was uncalled for. And anyone who knows me and my true nature knows that I don’t believe in any of that; I don’t wanna be part of any group. I’m an individual and I am a thousand percent apologetic to anyone that took offense to what I said, because you should have taken offense to what I said. And I am so sorry, and I hope you just… Man, give me another chance to… Just give me another chance. I love all of you. And anyone who’s met me, anyone who knows me knows that I love all of you. Bless you.
