Since Barack Obama has been president, white supremacists and conservatives contend that many of his executive actions have encouraged “white genocide.” Furthermore, the changes in racial demographics and growth of multiculturalism are said to be the main culprits to the “plight” of white people, and therefore, are driving them into a minority population. However, with America consisting of 77.5% whites (62.2% non-Hispanic White), are their claims even possible?
Since the Immigration and Nationality Act was passed in 1965, America’s populous of immigrants has had a drastic exponential increase. Immigrants and their descendants have accounted for just over half the nation’s population growth. As of 2014, 31.1% of the country is comprised of immigrants—most of whom are from Mexico, and 3.5% are unauthorized. Furthermore, according to Pew Research, immigrants will be the central force in U.S. population growth and change over the next 50 years. So does this mean that an increase in immigration can potentially lead to a reduction in the overall white population?
NOTE: This table has been modified to remove the “Race Alone or In Combination” population breakdown.
Based on projections made by the Census Bureau, by the year 2060, non-Hispanic Whites will consist of only 44% of the population—an 8% reduction from 2014. Moreover, by 2044 they will have officially become a “majority-minority.” This means that whites will no longer represent the majority of the local population, but instead will be the largest minority group in the country.
To white supremacists and conservatives this is completely disastrous and goes against their interpretation of the laws and values that America was founded upon. Essentially, they are correct. Whites being a majority-minority could potentially mean that they will no longer have the unequivocal ability to structure the country’s political, economic, and social behaviors to maintain a position of superiority.
White genocide is a euphemism for anti-multiculturalism. Multiculturalism has completely shaped the way that whites perceive immigration. This is because whites being a minority group could possibly depolarize the races, rectify social and economic inequities, and systematically and institutionally eradicate racism. Obviously, this threatens the power, opportunities, resources, and privileges naturally warranted to white citizenry.
Many critics of multiculturalism have argued that it could produce a “loss of national identity,” however I question what about individual disempowerment or the loss of racial identity as a result of whites and plutocracy? In America, the national identity for all races and ethnic groups have been that of white society, creating a wealth of racial resentment. On the other hand, multiculturalism promotes cultural individuality and community cohesion.
Overall, if studies are correct there just may be hope for American minorities in the future. With whites possessing an equal share of the country, all people will have an equal opportunity to take advantage of life’s liberties and chances.
