Protesters have taken to the streets near West Chicago after the Chicago police department released a police dash cam video, revealing Jason Van Dyke—white cop, fatally shooting 17-year-old, African-American Laquan McDonald. The murder itself took place October 2014, but the video wasn’t released until now as a result of a court order.
In the extremely disturbing and graphic footage, McDonald can be seen bristly walking away from officers that had their weapons drawn. Unexpectedly, officer Van Dyke emptied his gun clip on McDonald as he lay dead on the ground. And in the last minutes of the footage, an officer kicks what has been said to be a 3-inch knife from McDonald’s hands.
According to police, “[McDonald] had refused to follow officers’ instructions as he walked down a street with a knife and that he had punctured several cars’ tires.” However, charging documents noted that, “None of the officers observed McDonald attempt to throw his knife at defendant (Van Dyke), jump or lunge toward Van Dyke, raise his knife as if to stab defendant, or did anything that was obviously threatening toward defendant beyond what was depicted in the video and not responding to commands while carrying a knife.”
Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond. Fraternal Order of Police leaders sent out an email Tuesday night to all current and retired FOP members asking them to contribute to a fundraising effort for bail money once his bond is set. Also, in a failed, yet proactive attempt to raise money for Van Dyke’s bond, wife Tiffany created a GoFundMe page that was ultimately removed. “The campaign in question was removed for a violation of our terms and conditions,” GoFundMe spokesperson Kelsea Little told DNAinfo.com Chicago. “GoFundMe does not accept campaigns for the defense or support of anyone alleged to be involved in criminal activity. All donations will be automatically refunded to the donors.”
What’s really appalling is that prior to the shooting, “At least 18 citizen complaints [including ‘ large excessive force and racial slurs’] have been filed against Van Dyke in his 14-year career, but he was never disciplined, according to a University of Chicago database.” Not to mention instead of firing Van Dyke after witnessing his murderous deed on film, the department perpetrated what is becoming the typical reaction to unwarranted police shootings, simply demoted him.
Now that the video has been made public, Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy suggests that citizens “have a right to be mad,” and so they are. Hundreds of protesters began marching through the city’s streets. Some even circled police cars while chanting “16 shots,” referencing the number of shots to McDonald’s body.
This entire case is nothing but a blatant cover up by CPD and here’s why:
- Van Dyke was charged only after the courts ordered that the police department release the video of McDonald’s fatal shooting.
- CPD and city council have admitted that they’ve “feared” the video would spark public outrage and possibly cause a repeat of chaos (rioting and looting) that occurred in cities such as Baltimore and Ferguson, after young black males were slaughtered by cops or died in police custody.
- McDonald’s family received a $5 million settlement by the city back in April 2015, clearly long before any charges had been filed against Van Dyke.
Overall, this particular incident notes the first time a Chicago police officer has actually been charged with first-degree murder for an on-duty fatality in nearly 35 years. Van Dyke faces 20 years to life behind bars if found guilty.
