Many people argue that Senator Bernie Sanders isn’t electable because “he doesn’t care about black issues.” This bewildering narrative is the furthest from the truth and only takes an effortless amount of research on Bernie Sander’s impeccable record on civil rights to refute.
Bernie Sanders entered into politics through fighting against racial inequality. As a matter of fact, he organized the CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) in Chicago in the 1960’s. And in 1962, Bernie Sanders was one of 13 demonstrators who was arrested for protesting the university’s failure to end segregation immediately in apartment buildings the school has purchased by staging a sit-in at a real estate office which operates University of Chicago rental buildings and refusing to leave after closing hours. Furthermore, Bernie Sanders is one of only 2 sitting U.S. Senators who actually attended the 1963 March on Washington, and saw Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., give his “I Have A Dream” speech in person.
Senator Sanders even endorsed Jesse Jackson during both of his Democratic presidential runs in 1984 and 1988. Actually, in 1988, Sanders and his organizers helped Jackson win a surprise victory in the Vermont caucuses–by one state delegate. In Jesse’s memorable phrase, Bernie Sanders & Jim Hightower were among the few elected White officeholders brave enough to “cross the color line” to support him when it mattered.
Currently, Senator Sanders is on a campaign to end institutional racism, force accountability amongst police officers who break the laws and enforce brutality, create jobs and education rather than incarceration, and raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. He is the only presidential candidate to admit that, “Black people are dying in this country because we have a criminal justice system which is out of control. Because we have a system … where 50% of young, African-American kids are unemployed, are out in the streets, and … it is estimated that a black male baby born today stand a 1 in 4 chance ending up in criminal justice system.”
The senator has been the only presidential candidate to meet with Sandra Bland’s family and even publicly admit that if she was “a white, middle class woman [her death] would not have happened.” He’s gone on to acknowledge that, “Far too many African-Americans are unarmed, and getting shot and killed by police officers,” unlike many of the other candidates who have minimized or completely ignored the seriousness of this issue.
The fact is that people are tired of paid and bought candidates, and Bernie Sanders has made it very clear that “enough is enough.” As a matter of fact, he has gone out of his way to expose “bought” candidates, such as Hillary Clinton. On the other hand, unlike Clinton and all of the Republican candidates, with the exception of Donald Trump, Senator Sanders refuses to accept donations from large corporations, Wall Street, the big banks, or anyone else who hasn’t or doesn’t prioritize the benefit of the American people. He is the only genuine candidate for African-American people, and not for the rich and corrupt.
The senator has been very consistent on his opposition and frustration with American “millionaires and billionaires not paying their fair share of taxes,” as well getting richer while the middle class perishes. Bernie Sanders is the only presidential candidate to admit that the real reason blacks, as well as many other Americans, are suffering from poverty and major wealth inequality is because the millionaire and billionaire class–Wall Street, paying politicians to vote and pass laws that are in their favor at the expense of the American people.
Nevertheless, the video below provides the perfect explanation as to why Bernie Sanders will be the best president for blacks:
